Question for Open Data Challenge 2016
Introduction
Open Data Challenge is a half day event that stimulates creativity and innovation, and inspires the participant to code and develop visualization, software program or a mobile apps. It is designed to increase awareness on the availability of open government data web portal (data.gov.bn) and encourage the public to use the freely available government data.
Instructions:
- It is a half day event (Saturday, 27th August 2016).
- The maximum number of participants per group is 5 individuals including a team lead.
- Each group have to pitch their project / apps for 15-20 minutes.
- The selection of the project or idea must be based on the Brunei Open Data.
- The participants are invited to explore Brunei's open data web portal and the Brunei Government agencies website to access the wide array of dataset possibilities related to economy and health from across Brunei.
- Participants were encouraged to mash-up government datasets when building apps.
- Each team require to use their own computer or laptop to develop and present their idea and innovation.
- Each team have to determine and are given an option to select the platform and categories for your project.
Objectives
- Promote awareness on data.gov.bn.
- Encourage the data utilization.
- Encourage management of data / information.
- Stimulate development of innovation and entrepreneurship eco-system.
- Promote adoption of open data policies and transparency.
The challenge has 2 types of participation:
- Students from higher institution such as UBD, UTB, Micronet, MTSSR, Cosmopolitan College, Laksamana College of Business, IGS College, and Sixth Form Centres.
- Public such as IT Developer and IT Designer.
Why Participate?
- To learn more about open government data and to learn and experiment with new programming language or platform.
- Open Data Challenge give a great opportunity to meet and talk to new people with different backgrounds which sharing, exchange ideas and gather working team could beneficial.
- A best place to present and share your great idea and creativity in the development of a good product and gives the chance to explore new ideas.
- To gain knowledge and generate ideas and become more innovative.
- To increase knowledge on how data can be used and how to gain its benefit.
Categories
The challenge are divided into 4 categories and one winner from each category will awarded a cash prize of:

Visualization - create a visualization or data model and produce analyses that help to get clear picture on the datasets in the open data portal.
Application ( Mobile or Web apps) - develop a software program that can be run and use on mobile devices or other devices to perform specific functions based on the datasets.
Evaluation Criteria
The judges award the first prize based on and not limited to the following criteria :
- Overall Presentation Skills (10%)
Body Language / Charisma, Clarity, Passion
- Quality of solutions (45%)
The idea and relevance of solution to the problem. The usability, originality, creativity and effectiveness of their innovation in helping solve the problem
- Future of the Innovation (45%)
Outlining phases of innovation, outline the future steps needed to complete the final working solution
Terms and Conditions
- All Intellectual Property right relating to the Applications and Visualization developed by participants will belong to the organizer’s right (EGNC).
- The participants agrees that the organizer of the open data roadshow and challenge event may use and publish the Applications and Visualization submitted/ developed by participant on the organizer’s website(s) including the names of persons who have developed the Application and Visualization.
- There is no obstacle for any organizer to use any Application or Visualization, even if it has been selected as wining application or visualization.
